Admission to Moncton Kennel Club Shows

The Moncton Kennel Club is pleased to welcome spectators to our events. Admission is $5 per person, with kids 12 and under free. Parking is also free.

There are lots of shows across the Maritimes and the country! To find a show near you, visit canuckdogs.com and explore their calendar of events. Other shows may charge admission, parking, or ask for a small donation to local food banks. Spectator details are usually available in the show’s Premium List.

Dog shows are a great opportunity to spend time ringside, watch judging up close, and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere centered around dogs and their people. Please note that only dogs entered in the show are permitted on the grounds unless otherwise specified.

Understanding a Dog Show (At a Glance)

A dog show is a competition where dogs are evaluated against the official breed standard, which describes the ideal characteristics, structure, and temperament for each breed. Dogs are not judged against each other directly, but rather on how closely they match their breed’s standard.

Judging takes place in rings throughout the day. Each breed is judged separately, beginning with regular classes for male and female dogs, followed by champions competing for Best of Breed. Some dogs may return later in the day to compete in group judging and, ultimately, Best in Show.

In addition to conformation, you may also see other events such as obedience, rally, agility, or junior handling, depending on the show. These events highlight different skills and abilities and are enjoyable to watch even if you are new to the sport.

Spectators are welcome to watch ringside, take photos where permitted, and ask questions when exhibitors are not preparing to compete. Dog shows are educational, welcoming events, and a great way to learn more about responsible breeding and dog ownership.

Spectator Etiquette

Dog shows are welcoming and educational events, and a little courtesy helps ensure a positive experience for everyone. Please keep the following in mind while attending:

  • Always ask before touching a dog. Some dogs are resting, being groomed, or preparing to compete and should not be distracted.
  • Do not approach dogs near the rings unless invited. Dogs in or near the ring need to stay focused on their handlers.
  • Keep aisles and ring entrances clear. Exhibitors need space to move dogs safely and efficiently.
  • Follow posted signs and announcements. Some areas may be restricted to exhibitors only.
  • Photography is usually welcome, but avoid flash photography ringside, as it can distract dogs.
  • Be respectful and patient. Exhibitors may be busy before or after judging, but many are happy to answer questions when time allows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring my dog to the show?
Generally, only dogs entered in the show are permitted on the grounds. This helps maintain safety, biosecurity, and a calm environment for competing dogs.

Is there a best time to attend?
Shows run throughout the day, but the best time to attend depends on what you want to see. Refer to the judging schedule, which is typically posted about a week ahead of the show, to find the best time to watch specific breeds.

In Canada, group judging typically takes place once all the breeds within that group have completed their judging. Because of this, exhibitors may leave once their breed and any related judging are finished. Checking the judging schedule in advance will help you plan your visit and ensure you do not miss the breeds or groups you are most interested in.

Can I talk to exhibitors or breeders?
Yes, when they are not actively preparing to compete. Dog shows are a great place to learn, but timing and courtesy are important.

Are dog shows family-friendly?
Absolutely. Dog shows are suitable for all ages and are a fun way for families to learn about different breeds and dog sports.

What should I wear or bring?
Comfortable clothing and footwear are recommended, as you may be standing or walking for extended periods. Bringing water and a show schedule can also be helpful.

Many shows also feature a small selection of vendors. You may want to allow extra time to browse and bring a little spending money in case you find something special to take home to your dog!

We look forward to welcoming you to a Moncton Kennel Club dog show and hope you enjoy your visit.
