What is a Sanction Match?
A sanction match is a relaxed, educational event that gives dogs and people a chance to practice in a real show-style setting, without the pressure of earning championship points. These matches are approved by the CKC and are open to recognized and listed breeds only, following the same general structure as a conformation show.
Think of a sanction match as a training ground. The ring set-up and procedures closely mirror those of an official conformation show, but the atmosphere is more forgiving and welcoming. Sanction matches are designed to help everyone involved gain experience, from dogs and handlers to stewards and aspiring judges working toward their judging licence.
Why Attend a Match?
Sanction matches offer many benefits, especially for those who are new to the sport or looking to build confidence:
- Valuable ring experience for dogs, helping them become comfortable with the show environment
- Hands-on learning for exhibitors and handlers, offering the opportunity to practice ring procedure, presentation, and handling skills in a real show environment while building confidence and experience
- A practical training opportunity for aspiring judges pursuing their judging licence
- Lower-pressure atmosphere, with no championship points at stake
- Helpful, educational feedback in a supportive environment
Whether you’re preparing for future shows, gaining experience in a specific role, or simply enjoying a fun and educational day with fellow dog enthusiasts, sanction matches are an excellent way to learn, practice, and grow in the sport.
Upcoming Matches
Stay tuned for upcoming matches! Over the past few years, we have held matches in February and March (before the show season starts here in the Maritimes) but we may add additional matches if there is demand and volunteer availability!
